The Family Forest Carbon Program is now enrolling landowners in select Midwest counties in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Trees sequester and store carbon as they grow. The longer they grow, the more carbon they take out of the atmosphere. Forests are also vulnerable to the effects of our already changing climate. Having a diverse forest of different age trees, including more mature trees, helps create a forest that is more resilient long-term, protecting this important carbon sink and providing other critical benefits such as habitat and clean water.
By engaging in climate-friendly sustainable forest management, you can increase your forest’s value to you, your family, wildlife and the climate.
Forest Management Practices
Growing Mature Forests
This practice will enhance the carbon storage on your land by growing larger trees, while also increasing the long-term value and health of your land. Specifically in this contract, you will:
- Wait until your trees reach a certain size before harvesting.
- Be permitted to cut firewood for personal use at any time.
Practices were selected through consultation of a team of regional forestry, wildlife and climate experts in line with the Climate Change Field Guide for Northern Wisconsin Forests guidelines.
Is This Program Right for You?
To be eligible for these practices, you should:
- Have forested property in Michigan (Baraga, Dickinson, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Marquette and Ontonagon counties), Minnesota (Becker, Cass, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Morrison and Wadena counties), or Wisconsin (Ashland, Iron and Vilas counties).
- Own 30 or more acres of non-planted, naturally regenerating trees on your property.
- Have the legal right to harvest on your land.
- Be able to commit to a 20-year agreement.
