[Get Started](https://familyforestcarbon.org/get-started/) [How It Works](https://familyforestcarbon.org/how-it-works/) #### The Tools You Need To Do Right by Your Land The Family Forest Carbon Program provides financial and technical resources to help you improve the health and value of your woodland. The program was developed by two national nonprofits, the [American Forest Foundation](https://forestfoundation.org/) and [The Nature Conservancy](https://www.nature.org/en-us/about-us/where-we-work/united-states/family-forest-carbon-program/), to help forest owners implement sustainable forest management practices that result in healthier forests, higher-quality timber, improved wildlife habitat and increased carbon storage. The Family Forest Carbon Program enables private forest owners across 20 states to access the voluntary carbon market, a growing market that has been traditionally inaccessible to smaller forest owners, providing landowners with income they can use toward forest management costs or to help pay property taxes. **Now, eligible forest owners can earn 25% more by enrolling in the program through our Premium Partnership.** More details are available on the [How It Works](https://familyforestcarbon.org/how-it-works/) page. Landowners in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina with 30+ acres of unplanted fields can receive funding to diversify their land through [Fields & Forests](https://familyforestcarbon.org/fieldtoforest/). _The Family Forest Carbon Program is a program of the Family Forest Impact Foundation LLC, an affiliate of the 501(c)(3) non-profit American Forest Foundation. Learn how it all began. Developed by the [American Forest Foundation](http://forestfoundation.org "American Forest Foundation") and [The Nature Conservancy](http://nature.org "The Nature Conservancy"), the Family Forest Carbon Program brings together family forest owners and companies to improve forest health, address climate change and support American communities. _The Family Forest Carbon Program is a program of the Family Forest Impact Foundation LLC, an affiliate of the American Forest Foundation._ ### Why Family-Owned Forests & Carbon Markets? Forests across the United States currently reduce overall U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 12% each year. Studies show that this number could be more than doubled with the right actions. Families and individuals collectively own the largest portion of America’s forests, making them essential players in the fight against climate change. Carbon markets can help forest owners finance practices that improve forest health and address climate change. But historically, these markets have only been accessible to forest owners who own several thousand acres or more. This is mostly due to high upfront costs needed for carbon inventories, program complexity and 100-year contracts, preventing forest owners with smaller acreages from getting involved. Combining their joint expertise in carbon sequestration science and connections to family forest owners across the country, American Forest Foundation and The Nature Conservancy developed the Family Forest Carbon Program as an innovative solution to these challenges. **We believe that carbon markets should and can benefit landowners from all walks of life.** The Family Forest Carbon Program takes a unique and credible approach so that family forest owners with properties as small as 30 acres can participate and earn income for implementing climate-positive practices. ### What We Do The Family Forest Carbon Program works with family and individual landowners to manage their forests in ways that meaningfully increase the amount of carbon sequestered and stored, and partners with businesses who are working to confront climate change and achieve vital social, economic and environmental outcomes. Our work is made possible thanks to expertise and involvement from scientists, foresters, landowners and local organizations who work together to ensure the program is meeting the needs of family forest owners, companies and the planet. The Family Forest Carbon Program is not a government-run program. It is funded through philanthropic donations, grants and contracts with corporations purchasing verified carbon credits, and its finances are administered through the Family Forest Impact Foundation, an affiliate of the American Forest Foundation. ### Join Our Team Interested in joining our team of mission-driven experts? Our team will reach out to answer any questions you have an help you decide if Fields & Forests fits your goals for your land. If you decide to continue with enrollment we will connect you with a local professional forester who will walk your land and confirm your eligible acres. When you are ready, we will send you a payment offer to review and approve. Once you have signed your official landowner agreement we will begin processing your first payment, and your forester will reach out to get started on your management plan! \[ ] What happens during site preparation? Your AFF-contracted forester will oversee site preparation in the late-summer or fall months, ahead of the winter planting season. This process usually includes 1-2 rounds of chemical site prep, and sometimes involves mechanical site prep such as chipping, mastication, or piling. Your consulting forester is welcome to be on site for this work. \[ ] What happens during the planting process? Our team will provide loblolly pine seedlings that are adapted to your area for optimal growth and disease resistance. Our contracted foresters will oversee the on-the-ground-work of planting in the late winter months. If you have a consulting forester they are also welcome on site. Our team will then work to ensure the survival of your seedlings in the first year of growth. \[ ] What happens after planting? We understand that many landowners enter this program without any forestry experience or access to forestry expertise. We become your long-term partner in forest stewardship by providing you with ongoing technical support and guidance, as well as access to a community of forest owners and professionals who can answer questions and share resources. ###### About the Program \[ ] Who is behind Fields & Forests Fields & Forests is a program of the American Forest Foundation (AFF), a national conservation organization that works to support family landowners in making meaningful conservation impact. Since 1932, AFF has brought together many different groups to work toward common objectives, such as improving clean water, wildlife habitats, and sustainable wood supplies. As a nonprofit, we work hard to carefully manage the resources provided by our many partners and donors to maximize their impact in addressing our nation’s most pressing conservation challenges. Our current vision is to empower American landowners to capture and store an additional one billion tonnes of carbon by 2050. To learn more about AFF visit [www.forestfoundation.org](https://www.forestfoundation.org/). \[ ] How is Fields & Forests funded? The majority of our funding currently comes from private donations, grants, and the sale of carbon credits in the voluntary carbon market. Companies are increasingly seeking solutions to help them meet their carbon emission goals, and many pay for high-quality carbon credits produced by programs like ours. We use the funds from these agreements to put as much money back into the pockets of rural American families as possible. \[ ] Am I eligible to replant my previously forested land? To be eligible for Fields & Forests your land cannot have been forested in the past 10 years. Unfortunately this means if your land was recently clearcut, or damaged by a natural disaster, you are not eligible for F\&F at this time. \[ ] Will I lose the rights, ownership, or access to my land? No. While enrolled in Fields & Forests you will continue to own and have full access to your land. We are leasing only your carbon rights, which simply means you cannot enroll in another carbon payment program during your contract term with Fields & Forests. You are also entitled to the revenue from any (optional) thinning or harvesting you decide to do while enrolled. \[ ] Why loblolly pine? The loblolly pine is the most common native tree species in the American Southeast. Known for its fast growth and adaptability, this evergreen can be successfully planted in wet lowlands or dry areas and is resilient to severe weather. It can grow up to 2 feet per year, reaching heights of up to 90 feet with a canopy of up to 40 feet at maturity. Because of its impressive size and growth rate, loblolly pine stands quickly produce high-value timber, and capture and store carbon more efficiently than other species. Click here to learn more about the benefits of growing loblolly pine. \[ ] What if I want to sell or pass down my land? The contract you sign when you enroll with Fields & Forest "runs with the land" meaning any future owners would need to take over the agreement for the remainder of the original enrollment period. Because this program provides low-maintenance income, for many landowners it is a great opportunity to keep their land in the family while requiring less labor and maintenance than growing crops or grazing cattle. \[ ] Can I continue farming or grazing on my land? Yes, Fields & Forests is meant to diversify your land, not replace it with forest. We require a minimum of 30 plantable acres to be eligible for the program, but any land above and beyond that minimum may remain open field and be kept as pasture or cropland. \[ ] How will I earn income from Fields & Forests? Fields & Forests provides landowner with a low-maintenance opportunity to diversify the income from their land. This includes the guaranteed annual payments of $30/acre each year, any profits generated from thinning or harvesting timber while enrolled, and revenue generated from continued farming or grazing cattle on adjacent fields. Landowners are also free to explore additional opportunities such as selling hunting leases. ### Do you currently own 30 acres or more of forest? **[The Family Forest Carbon Program](https://familyforestcarbon.org/)** provides financial and technical resources to help you improve the health and value of your woodland. **[Learn more](https://familyforestcarbon.org/)**. ### What's Next for Your Fields? These are ambitious goals, and your partnership can help us get there. "The program is at the forefront of forest carbon strategies, using ground-breaking approaches that help small landowners join the fight against climate change." ###### Matt Thurston, Director of Sustainability, REI "WestRock’s sustainability platform is built on our commitment to people and communities, to our customers and to a better planet. The Family Forest Carbon Program provides an avenue to address these three key areas by improving the health of our forests and wood fiber supply, tackling climate change, and supporting the communities in which we source our wood fiber." ###### Kevin Hudson, WestRock Foundation Board Member and Senior Vice President, Forest & Recycle Fibers, WestRock "We proudly support the Family Forest Carbon Program in protecting and restoring land upon which countless people, ecosystems and wildlife depend." ###### Gayle Schueller, Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer, 3M ### The High Integrity Option Taking a step forward in transparency and credibility, the Family Forest Carbon Program has developed a new forest carbon accounting methodology to measure and verify the carbon sequestered and stored by the landowners enrolled. This new approach provides a highly credible claim of additionality. Our [new methodology](https://familyforestcarbon.org/our-approach/advancing-credibility "Advancing Credibility") was officially validated and approved by [Verra](https://verra.org/methodology/methodology-for-improved-forest-management/), the globally recognized nonprofit organization that oversees the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), as of [October 2022](https://www.forestfoundation.org/why-we-do-it/family-forest-blog/verra-approval). _[Learn more about how we are ensuring the credibility of our credits](https://familyforestcarbon.org/our-approach/advancing-credibility)._ In accordance with California Assembly Bill 1305, you can find our [disclosure information here](https://assets.ctfassets.net/rsvlu9dsaxdt/5yOb0GGx39wzJxTPudkejk/fcf33e5ec8a3ca791f917d10b5ead61d/AB_1305_Disclosures_2023.pdf). ## Ways to Partner with Us There are many ways the Family Forest Carbon Program can support your climate mitigation and philanthropic goals. Explore some of the partnership opportunities and benefits. #### Long-Term Offtake Agreements A long-term offtake agreement allows buyers to purchase a set amount of carbon credits annually and lock in price points for several years into the future. As demand continues to rise and carbon credit prices are expected to increase fifty-fold by 2050, long-term offtake agreements provide companies an affordable price and steady access to carbon credits. #### Philanthropic Donations As the Family Forest Carbon Program aims to enroll 20% of U.S. family-owned forest acres in climate-friendly practices, philanthropic donations will be a vital tool in meeting this substantial need and growing the program at scale. Your support helps us expand into new regions, hire more natural resource professionals to support a diverse population of landowners and strengthen our scientific approach. #### Custom Opportunities From in-kind agreements to other ways to buy carbon credits, [connect with us](https://familyforestcarbon.org/ffcp-newsletter-sign-up/) to find the opportunity that best suits your goals. #### Scaling Impact Every Day Our buyers and donors are vital to scaling the impact of the Family Forest Carbon Program. __ 2,510,000+ TONS CO2e STORED __ 585,000+ CAR EMMISSIONS OFFSET FOR ONE YEAR __ 26 CORPORATE PARTNERS --- # American Forest Foundation Carbon Auction > Meet your net-zero goals by joining the first U.S. nature-based carbon credit auction brought to you by the American Forest Foundation. Our program provides a transparent, high-integrity approach to forest carbon projects in the voluntary carbon market — ensuring meaningful and measurable impact. ### FAQs \[ ] Why is AFF hosting an auction? Globally, [only 1.2% of the annual potential of nature-based solutions has been unlocked by the voluntary carbon market](https://climatefocus.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Global-analysis-of-available-supply-potential.pdf). Under this status quo, we risk not financing enough projects to produce a sufficient supply of high-quality credits to reach our collective climate goals. The American Forest Foundation Carbon Auction is designed to create a more streamlined system for buying and selling carbon credits, by:   - Reducing transactional friction and costs for buyers and sellers.   - Providing buyers with transparent information about carbon projects to determine if those credits are suitable for their portfolio.   - Giving buyers secure access to high-quality nature-based credits to hedge against future price increases.   - Providing developers with the catalytic capital they need to get projects off the ground and accommodate the next generation of carbon accounting methodologies that apply a dynamic baseline approach. These methodologies aim to ensure projects are truly additional, financially viable, and environmentally impactful. \[ ] Who can participate? Corporations or investors interested in procuring high-quality, verified carbon credits as part of a comprehensive approach to implementing a net-zero strategy are welcome to participate in the auction. If you are not interested in buying carbon credits at this time, we invite you to still follow along and join in the process by signing up for our email updates. \[ ] When is the auction? The American Forest Foundation Carbon Auction will be held on March 12-19, 2025. A data room of due diligence resources will also be available for 9 weeks beforehand. \[ ] What kind of credits are being auctioned, and under what terms? Removal and emission reduction credits will be available for auction, with the majority being removal credits. Once the auction has concluded, one or more selected bidders will be identified by American Forest Foundation as the winning bidder(s). Buyers will provide a percentage of discounted upfront financing for a portion of the contracted volume of credits. Then, these buyers will make pre-payments once milestones toward annual enrollment targets are achieved. For the remaining portion of contracted credit volume, buyers will pay upon delivery on a market unit-contingent basis. We believe this blended financing model allows buyers to secure the delivery of verified carbon credits below future forecasted market prices, while also providing catalytic funding to scale a high-quality nature-based solution within the voluntary carbon market. \[ ] What makes the Family Forest Carbon Program a high-quality project I should invest in? The Family Forest Carbon Program takes a highly credible and transparent approach to the way we calculate our carbon benefit — resulting in meaningful and measurable impact. The key sources of FFCP’s quality are: - The next generation of forest carbon accounting methodologies (VM 0045 and VM 0047), both of which our own science experts had a hand in creating, and which calculates the additional CO2e sequestered and/or stored by the project. Both methodologies use a dynamic baseline, in which project areas are compared to matched non-project areas, isolating the impact of the project intervention.    - An approach to long-term monitoring and stewardship that is above and beyond the current market requirements. FFCP credits represent the cutting edge when it comes to questions of permanence and durability.  - Practices carefully designed with other forest values in mind. FFCP practices aim to sustain and enhance biodiversity, improve water quality, and support economic development into the future. \[ ] How do I learn more about FFCP and the upcoming auction? After visiting your land to understand its ecology and challenges, an expert forester will design a management plan that is unique for your land with specific ways you can improve your forest’s health and value. In other words, it’s a guide made just for your forest. ## How Management Plans Can Help #### Better Understand Your Forest Part of planning will involve mapping your forest and taking stock of the species of plants and wildlife, how mature and healthy your trees are, and what challenges are present. Knowing all this will leave you better prepared to seize new opportunities and plan for forest management activities that keep your trees healthy and align with your goals. #### Conserve Your Family’s Legacy A management plan helps you conserve your land for the next generation and gives your family the tools to continue your conservation work. A thorough and well-maintained management plan is a detailed account of your land’s history and everything you’ve done to care for it. This will make it easier for your family or your heirs to understand your dedication to it and to help them make informed decisions about the land with you or in your absence. #### Qualify for Helpful Programs Beyond the Family Forest Carbon Program, many cost-sharing, financial assistance and technical assistance programs that help you care for your land require you to have a forest management plan. ### How to Use a Management Plan The Family Forest Carbon Program provides landowners with management flexibility. Many of the program’s practices are passive management practices, meaning they don’t require specific actions on your part. Other practices are active management practices that do require specific activities, such as removing invasive plant species from your property. Whether it be active or passive, forest management plans are useful tools for improving the health of your forest. #### Already Have a Management Plan? Forest management plans written in the last 10 years can be used for some Family Forest Carbon Program practices. The Family Forest Carbon Program is a pathway for landowners to improve forest health and help mitigate climate change while earning an income to cover the cost of taking care of their land. We help landowners implement improved forestry practices in their woodlands that result in greater amounts of carbon stored in their trees. Companies and other organizations can purchase verified carbon credits generated from the additional carbon sequestered on woodlands enrolled in the program. When you enroll, you’ll receive payments for implementing forest management practices that increase the carbon sequestered and stored on your land. You’ll also receive an expert consultation from a forester and a forest management plan uniquely designed for your property and your goals. Basic eligibility requires you have forested property in a region currently covered by the Family Forest Carbon Program, own 30 or more acres of non-planted, naturally regenerating trees on your property, have the legal right to harvest on your land and be able to commit to a 20-year agreement. Our program’s main goal is to connect landowners with forestry professionals to assist in the stewardship of their woodlands. The Family Forest Carbon Program is perfect for landowners who are trying to preserve the woodlands by promoting the growth of native species, older and more mature forests, and increase wildlife habitat. \[ ] What is the "carbon" in the Family Forest Carbon Program and what is a voluntary carbon market? The voluntary carbon market (VCM) is a marketplace for buying and selling carbon credits. The VCM is driven by companies and other organizations looking to mitigate and/or offset their carbon footprint voluntarily. In addition, the pricing of carbon credits, determined by supply and demand dynamics, plays a significant role in the functioning of the market. Each carbon credit in the VCM represents the removal or avoidance of one metric ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. \[ ] What are the non-financial (post-enrollment) benefits? 1. Expert guidance from a professional forester on how to improve the health of your woods, create habitat for wildlife, and treat invasive species. 1. A forest management plan customized for your land. Forest management plans are utilized to help guide activities intended to improve overall forest health and are recommendations based on the landowner’s individual goals. 1. Investment in the health and legacy of your land for future generations. 1. An avenue to increase the long-term value of your trees. 1. Inclusion in a community of woodland owners who share your same interests and passions. 1. Improved air quality, water quality and environment. \[ ] Where does this program get its funding? The Family Forest Carbon Program (FFCP) was created in partnership by the American Forest Foundation and The Nature Conservancy. The Family Forest Carbon Program is funded by the sales of verified carbon credits, and by both private and public philanthropic contributions. \[ ] Why isn’t my land eligible? There are several reasons why forest land may not be eligible for our program. The most common reasons include: 1. **Parcel Size:** Currently, the Family Forest Carbon Program requires a minimum of 30 acres of fully forested land. It’s possible your parcel may be 30 or more acres, but if there are not 30 acres of land with forest cover, unfortunately, your land is not eligible for FFCP. 1. **Ownership Type:** Enrolled land must be privately owned. If you selected public land on our map, it would be deemed ineligible. 1. **Regeneration:** To qualify, the 30 acres of forest land must be naturally regenerating, meaning that the woods cannot be planted, like you would find on a tree farm or Christmas tree farm. 1. **Forest Type:** Based on our scientific model and methodology, we require that enrolled forests are primarily composed of hardwood tree species, such as maple, beech, and birch. These forest types are often: Laurentian-Acadian hardwood forest, Northern hardwoods forest, Appalachia northern hardwood forest, or Appalachian (Hemlock) northern hardwood forest. These baseline criteria are what we can identify using our mapping tool. But we know mistakes happen, so if you believe your land _does_ meet these specifications, [please complete this form for a manual review](https://share.hsforms.com/1xRT3ZeBeTrqyX-MDnBX1Rw1j0ai). ###### _&#xNAN;_Premium Partnership \[ ] What is the Premium Partnership? The Premium Partnership is a unique offering from the Family Forest Carbon Program. It has the same practice requirements and program benefits as our standard offer (like guaranteed annual payments, access to a professional forester, and a forest management, etc.), but **it offers a 25% higher total contract value** than enrolling in our standard offer and **expands access to more opportunities**. In return for the increased contract value, landowners who wish to enroll in the Premium Partnership must complete several additional compliance requirements. \[ ] What makes this opportunity different from your standard offer? The only difference between the Premium Partnership and the standard Family Forest Carbon Program offer is that the Premium Partnership provides a higher contract value, in return for completing the additional compliance requirements. Additionally, it opens the door to access additional opportunities to secure support in stewarding your land. \[ ] What are the additional steps I need to complete as part of this offer? There are two primary additional steps: 1. You must establish a Farm Record with your local Farm Service Agency (FSA) for the entire forested area you are enrolling in the program, which includes completing Form AD-1026 (certifies whether your land includes highly erodible areas or wetlands) and Form 2047 (collects your contact and demographic information to establish program eligibility). 1. On an annual basis, you must submit a Producer Subsidiary Print to the Family Forest Carbon Program, which is a document that is provided by the FSA upon request, and summarizes compliance with the previous steps. The FFCP team is available and happy to guide you through completing these steps. \[ ] What is the Farm Service Agency (FSA)? The FSA is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). It provides disaster assistance, safety net, farm loan, and conservation programs, and is the go-to agency for many USDA records. If you’re new to working with USDA, your local FSA office will help you register your property with a Farm Record. \[ ] How do I find my local FSA office? In your internet browser, you can type in to use the FSA Office Locator. Enter your state and county to find your nearest FSA office with contact info and office hours. The Family Forest Carbon Program team can also help you find an agency office that is closest to you. \[ ] Do I need to visit the FSA office in person? Maybe. It depends on the policies of your local FSA office. Some FSA offices require you to visit in person to establish Farm Records, while others offer options to complete the process online. Contact your local FSA office to confirm their specific requirements and/or schedule an appointment. \[ ] How should I prepare for my FSA visit? When you schedule an appointment, you should ask about specific documents or records that are required to establish a Farm Record and make the most of your appointment. You will typically need: - Proof of identity (driver's license, etc.). - Proof of ownership (deed, etc.) that includes a complete Property Description. - Official tax identification (Social Security number or employer ID) and business documents such as proof of trust signature authority, if applicable. \[ ] Why do I need to submit this information to the FSA? This information is required by the FSA to establish a Farm Record, sometimes known as a Farm & Tract Number. You are required to establish a Farm Record for the entire forested area that you are enrolling in FFCP. \[ ] What if I already have a Farm Record? Great! Some landowners may already have a Farm & Tract Number. You’ll need to confirm that your already established Farm Record covers the entire forested area of your property that is being enrolled in the program. In our experience, we’ve found that many landowners who have Farm Records may have them for agricultural land, like their farm fields, but not necessarily their forested land. If you already have a Farm Record, you’ll still need to connect with your local FSA to collect all the required compliance documents (like support maps and your Subsidiary Print). \[ ] Is this now a government program? No. The Family Forest Carbon Program remains a non-government program operated by the Family Forest Impact Foundation LLC, a 501c3 nonprofit and affiliate of the American Forest Foundation. However, the Premium Partnership is funded by a federal grant program, the Advancing Markets for Producers Grant Program, which is why enrolling in this option requires steps to register the land with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. \[ ] What is the Advancing Markets for Producers federal grant program? The USDA’s Advancing Markets for Producers (AMP) grant program helps farmers and ranchers access new market opportunities while implementing sound conservation practices. \[ ] Can I still sign up for other USDA funded opportunities? One of the benefits of the Premium Partnership is that your additional enrollment steps open the door for other federal programs. For instance, some opportunities include the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) or the Healthy Forests Reserve Program. Land eligibility varies by program, so you’ll need to look into specific eligibility requirements for these programs, but completing the steps required for the FFCP Premium Partnership is a great first step to accessing other opportunities. Our representatives can help you understand which other program may be a good fit for you and your land. \[ ] What if I don’t want to enroll with this option? No problem! You can still enroll in the Family Forest Carbon Program through our standard offer and receive all the program benefits. ###### _&#xNAN;_Carbon Market Overview \[ ] How much do companies pay for the carbon credits? Companies purchase carbon credits on the voluntary carbon market, which is influenced by multiple factors like project type, location, rigor of monitoring, verification and reporting, etc. All of these factors affect the price of carbon credits which fluctuate often and over time, like any other traded commodity. \[ ] How do we vet the companies that buy the carbon credits? FFCP has developed a policy that ensures our corporate buyers are aligned with our [mission, vision and values](https://www.forestfoundation.org/who-we-are/). Specifically, the policy includes taking the following steps when vetting a potential corporate buyer: 1. Review several third-party assessments, ratings and scorings such as Sustainalytics, and CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) Score 1. Consider the company’s direct conservation impact and whether the business has an impact specifically on family forest owners 1. Confirm they are aligned with accepted sustainability standards and have rigorous ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) strategies and transparency in reporting 1. Look at their commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) within their value chains. \[ ] Who buys the carbon credits and why? Companies who are looking to neutralize their emissions can purchase verified carbon credits generated from the additional carbon captured by a landowner’s implementation of the climate-smart forestry practices that the Family Forest Carbon Program prescribes. Revenues secured from the sales of verified carbon credits are directly used to fund the core functions of the program, which primarily cover the payments to enrolled landowners to implement those practices. ###### _&#xNAN;_Property Use \[ ] Can I still hunt/tap maples/maintain hiking trails, and use my land for recreation? Upon entering an agreement with FFCP, landowners will continue to maintain full control, privacy, and ownership of their land without restrictions on recreational activities such as hunting, fishing, or non-timber commercial activities, like harvesting. We are simply providing resources to help manage the forest. The only terms which a landowner must follow are the restrictions in place per their contract, as it relates to the conditions surrounding any removal of trees. \[ ] Can I enroll my property in other conservation programs while enrolled in FFCP? Landowners may not sell or give the carbon stored in the Family Forest Carbon Program project area to another organization, nor can they enroll in another forest carbon program. Landowners will still hold the timber, mineral, and other forest ecosystem benefit rights. ###### _&#xNAN;_Contract Questions \[ ] When am I officially enrolled? You are considered officially enrolled in the program when the **Landowner Participation Agreement** has been executed by both the yourself (the Landowner) and the program (Family Forest Impact Foundation). The effective date will be shown on the cover page of your agreement once it is fully signed. \[ ] What is the difference between a Landowner Participation Agreement and a Notice of Agreement? The _Landowner Participation Agreement_ is the contract between you and the Family Forest Impact Foundation (the legal entity operating the program) that outlines the full terms of your participation in the Family Forest Carbon Program, including responsibilities, requirements, benefits, and payment details. The _Notice of Agreement (NOA)_ is a recorded document to publicly acknowledge the agreement between you and the program. The NOA notifies anyone with an interest in the property over the next 20 years that both parties have ongoing obligations tied to the land. The NOA does not create any new terms or obligations; rather, it serves as a public record referencing your existing Agreement with us. \[ ] What happens if I need to sell my land or transfer ownership during the agreement? If you need to sell your enrolled property for any reason, a buyer should consider the program as part of the sale deal. It will be part of the landowner’s responsibility to make sure any prospective buyers understand that FFCP follows the land, not the owner. If the new landowners agree to the program terms, FFCP will work with both parties to transfer ownership of the future payments and remaining contract terms. \[ ] What happens if I want to leave the program before the end of the contract? Terminated contracts have significant implications for the program, but landowners are able to cancel their contracts at any time. In your agreement with the program, we outline various scenarios in a which a landowner may wish to terminate their agreement. In some cases, such as a natural disaster, the landowner will not be penalized, whereas in other cases, such voluntary termination of the agreement, the program may issue financial penalties for an early termination. \[ ] What happens if there is a fire/tornado/natural disaster? If there is a change to the forest outside of the landowner’s control, such as extreme weather, the landowner would not be penalized. The Family Forest Carbon Program will work with you to address next steps depending on the situation. \[ ] What happens if I die? The contract agreement with FFCP follows the property, not the owner. Upon death, FFCP will work with the new parties to transfer ownership of the future payments and the remaining contract terms. The new owner will not incur any fees/penalties. --- # FFCP Landowner Newsletter > Your land, your legacy. The Family Forest Carbon Program takes a highly credible and transparent approach to the way we calculate our carbon benefit—ensuring meaningful and measurable impact. ### Pioneering a New Model Carbon markets are an important tool in addressing climate change, and program developers must work to improve their impact. **Enter the Family Forest Carbon Program.** We have developed a new forest carbon accounting methodology to measure and verify the carbon sequestered and stored by the landowners in our program. It brings the latest science together with innovative business models to provide a more accurate measurement of the carbon benefit. Unlike other carbon credit methodologies, ours does not use a projected baseline. Rather, it uses a dynamic baseline. This means that our methodology compares the carbon sequestered on land enrolled in the Family Forest Carbon Program to highly comparable forests that are not enrolled in the program—in real time. By measuring the difference between the forests, our methodology can pinpoint the Family Forest Carbon Program as the variable that contributed to the carbon benefit—providing increased accuracy and transparency. This new methodology is approved by [Verra](https://verra.org/methodology/methodology-for-improved-forest-management/), the globally recognized nonprofit organization that oversees the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). ## How We Do It #### Establish a Baseline of Highly Similar Forested Properties Outside the Project Area A dynamic baseline of highly similar unenrolled properties outside the project area is established. The unenrolled properties are selected using the U.S. Forest Service's National Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) database and are matched to enrolled properties based on a minimum of 14 variables, including ecoregion, land elevation and average width of trees. #### Compare the Carbon Sequestered on Enrolled Properties to the Baseline of Unenrolled Properties To measure the carbon benefit of the project, enrolled properties are compared to the dynamic baseline of matched (unenrolled) forest plots. By measuring the difference between the forests, the methodology pinpoints the project as the intervention that contributed to the carbon benefit, providing increased accuracy and transparency to the marketplace. #### Calculate the Carbon Benefit at a Landscape Level Enrolled properties in a region are aggregated, as are the matched plots that form the dynamic baseline. The difference between the enrolled properties and matched (unenrolled) plots is the amount of gross carbon attributed to the project, which can then be sold in the form of verified carbon credits. This is calculated at each verification cycle. [Learn More about Our Advanced Methodology](https://assets.ctfassets.net/rsvlu9dsaxdt/1Fsx6GKtRVMshMkAMwfE6o/24650e5d34eb294f658ad85c8a9dde92/AFF_2022_Infographic_FINAL-Aug-approved.pdf) ### Breaking Down the Terminology #### Additionality Additionality has occurred if the carbon generated from a forest carbon project resulted from the specific intervention. A project has additionality only if the carbon sequestration and storage would not have occurred absent the project. [Learn more about additionality.](https://www.forestfoundation.org/why-we-do-it/family-forest-blog/determining-a-true-carbon-benefit-part-1-additionality/) #### Baseline The baseline is the starting point for calculating how much additional carbon is sequestered and stored as a result of a particular carbon project. The Family Forest Carbon Program uses a dynamic baseline rather than the common projected baseline. [Learn more about baselines.](https://www.forestfoundation.org/why-we-do-it/family-forest-blog/determining-a-true-carbon-benefit-part-2-baselines/) #### Permanence Permanence ensures emissions are kept out of the atmosphere for at least 100 years. This is a critical attribute of a true carbon benefit. Emissions that are removed or reduced need to be permanently removed or reduced in order to meaningfully reduce CO2e in our atmosphere. The Family Forest Carbon Program is looking for on-the-ground partners, including land trusts, conservation organizations, woodland associations, hunting groups and others who work directly with landowners, to help us connect with family forest owners in the Central Appalachians, the Midwest and the Northeast. If your organization works with landowners, the Family Forest Carbon Program is a new opportunity you can share with your members and contacts. ## Ways to Partner with Us There are many ways to partner with the Family Forest Carbon Program, including community outreach, post-enrollment services or creating a customized opportunity. We also offer payment and in-kind agreements for ongoing partnerships. #### Community Outreach and Referrals Spread the word about the value of the Family Forest Carbon Program and encourage landowners to sign up online or call (844) 790-0045. We offer print and digital resources that you can use in your outreach. #### Post-Enrollment Services Landowners participate in the Family Forest Carbon Program for a 20-year period. After their initial enrollment, our team continues to work with landowners to support climate-positive forest management practices. We’re looking for partners with valuable expertise and resources in fields like bird monitoring, habitat improvement and more to expand the range of options available to landowners. ### Resources - Appalachians | Growing Mature Forests Practice A detailed overview of the Growing Mature Forests practice for landowners in AL, FL, GA, KY, MD, NC, OH, PA, SC, TN, VA and WV. See what sets us apart. Landowners have several forest carbon programs to evaluate and enroll in, some with national reach and other more regional options. While these programs all provide revenue opportunities based on capturing, storing, and the sale of forest carbon, there are several factors that set the Family Forest Carbon Program apart. ### Our Competitive Advantage ##### 501c3 Nonprofit The Family Forest Carbon Program is the only not-for-profit enterprise offering a comprehensive forest carbon program for family-owned forestland. This means that the revenue from the sale of carbon credits is put back into achieving our mission, primarily by paying landowners annual payments. We do not have investors or shareholders seeking to make profits from the work you’re doing with your woods. ##### Terms of Agreement Our 20-year enrollment period is considerably shorter than many other programs, many of which have enrollment periods that range from 40-85 years. ##### Annual Payments We pay predictable and reliable annual fees per acre of enrolled land, taking on the market risk, guaranteeing payments to landowners regardless of the state of the voluntary carbon market. ##### Harvest Allowance The Family Forest Carbon Program offers the most generous harvest allowance. Many other programs do not allow harvests or have significant harvest restrictions. ##### Organizational History We are backed by the American Forest Foundation, which has an 80+ year history supporting and working with family forest owners, including managing programs like the American Tree Farm System. ### Dynamic Baselines: A Gold Standard for Carbon Accounting Methodology We have developed a new forest carbon accounting methodology to measure and verify the carbon sequestered and stored by the landowners in our program. It brings the latest science together with innovative business models to provide a more accurate measurement of the carbon benefit. Unlike other carbon credit methodologies, the Family Forest Carbon Program does not use a projected baseline. Rather, it uses a dynamic baseline. This means that our methodology compares the carbon sequestered on land enrolled in the program to highly comparable forests that are not enrolled in the program—in real time. By measuring the difference between the forests, our methodology can pinpoint the Family Forest Carbon Program as the variable that contributed to the carbon benefit—providing increased accuracy and transparency. This new methodology is approved by Verra, the globally recognized nonprofit organization that oversees the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). --- # Boosting the Power of Corporate Investment in the Fight Against Climate Change: Download Today > Innovative financing, high-integrity carbon credits & collaborating with America’s family forest owners to fight climate change.
